Information on the State Doctoral Examination

The State Doctoral Examination (hereinafter "SDE") is regulated by the Study and Examination Rules for Students of CTU.

Students in the full-time and combined form of doctoral degree study are obliged to pass SDE within 4 years from starting the study (with a potential extension by max. 1 year based on a justified application approved by the Dean).

SDE can only be taken after the completion of a study block (passing examinations in 6 professional courses, an examination in English and conducting a professional debate).

The SDE Examination Committee is approved by the Specialization Branch Board (ORO) Chairperson (based on a proposal by the Supervisor, Head of Department). The Examination Committee must have a minimum of five members, not including the Supervisor, and at least two members must be specialists outside CTU.
(List of internal and external members -- in Czech)

The Examination Committee for SDE is composed of professors, associate professors and outstanding specialists from practice. The specialists who are not professors or associate professors are approved as potential members of the Examination Committee by the Faculty Scientific Council. The Committee can only be chaired by a professor or associate professor.

Each doctoral degree student must submit an Application for state doctoral examination approved by the Supervisor and the Specialization Branch Board Chairperson, and hand it in at the Department of Doctoral Degree Studies together with the following compulsory enclosures:
  1. List of all publications – copies of three most important ones, including their potential responses
(must be documented by an excerpt from V3S).
  2. Study for a professional debate

The notice of holding SDE must be published on the doctoral degree study official board no later than 14 days before the SDE date.

Ballots – 1st round, 2nd round must be filled in for the resulting overall SDE evaluation. In the case that a ballot is invalid and this fact affects the voting result to the student´s detriment, the voting must be repeated. A report on SDE including its course and results is conducted and signed by the Examination Committee Chair and all present members.

Based on this report on SDE, the doctoral degree student will receive a Certificate of Passing SDE at the Department of Doctoral Degree Studies.
