August 1999

POINT The following represents the latest in a series of short monthly updates outlining activities and progress on the CME 03601-CZ, to be distributed directly to the partners within the project, and to be made available to all other interested parties, whether from the partner institutions involved, other academic institutions, and/or industry or non academic bodies

POINT During this month, a two week visit took place by the representative of the University of the West of England, Dr. Jones, in order to hold a number of progress meetings at both Charles University, the Czech Technical University, and REAT s.r.o.

POINT The visit to the Czech Republic was focused on the following areas

1. Data collection

The data collection situation at both sites was reviewed, via meetings between Dr.Jones, Dr.Bauer and Ing.Vcelova, both of the Czech Technical University, and with Miss Vanekova of Charles University. It was agreed that, although participation in this part of the project was not universal (i.e. not every member of staff at either site regularly contributed to the data collection as much as was possible) this activity had, over the past four months, nevertheless produced a substantial amount of information with which to establish an on line knowledge base. Also, an additional effect of the data collection stage had been to inform all staff members, and to enhance their understanding of the potential of an information resource unit, the data collection process itself acting as a means of dissemination.

2. Project evaluation

This visit also set into motion the design of the evaluation stage of the project, i.e., the methods by which the reactions and opinions of all those involved in the project so far could be assessed (in terms of its management, and its administration as well as from those individuals who participated in the data collection, and whose assistance enabled the creation of the knowledge base).

POINT As a result of this visit, personal contacts between the west and eastern partners was renewed, progress of the project in terms of information collection and dissemination was reviewed, and the financial aspects of the project were finally fully resolved.

Next month is: September
