About programme:

Title: BUILDINGS AND ENVIRONMENT
Degree: Master of Science
Form of study: Present (full-time on campus)
Standard length: 1.5 years (3 semesters)
Credits: 90 ECTS
Language: English
Programme co-ordinator: prof. Ing. Karel Kabele, CSc.

The study programme focuses on complex solutions to technical building systems such as heat and cold supply, ventilation, air conditioning, water management, lighting, acoustics and others. Emphasis is placed on understanding the links to the indoor environment theory, building physics, energy performance and the environment perceived throughout the entire life cycle of the building. By selecting optional courses and project topics, the program allows individual profiling according to students´ interest.

Characteristics:

  • Indoor environmental quality, well-being
  • Energy and environmental performance in buildings
  • Heating, ventilation, air conditioning of buildings
  • Thermal protection of buildings
  • Integrated building design
  • Modelling and simulation of technical building systems

Description by accreditation

The Master´s degree programme of Buildings and Environment is the English version of the programme of the same name taught in Czech. It is designed primarily for international students, Bachelor´s degree graduates, with a focus on civil or architectural engineering, building design, building services systems, the built environment, and related programmes; or Czech students who want to prepare for work in a foreign company and deepen their knowledge of professional English.

The instruction is aimed at mastering comprehensive knowledge of the principles of conceptual design of buildings, their parts, energy and environmental technical systems of buildings that ensure a comfortable and healthy indoor environment, responding to the users´ requirements, with minimum energy consumption and minimal burden on the environment. Emphasis is placed on a holistic understanding of the building with links to the external and internal environment in the whole building´s life cycle ("Integrated building design").

During the studies, knowledge is deepened in theoretical and preparatory subjects such as the indoor environmental theory, energy performance of buildings and environmental performance assessment of buildings. Within the individual professional areas of building design, energy and environmental systems, emphasis is placed on the selection criteria and the interrelationship of systems. The professional subjects predominantly focus on the optimisation of structural, energy and ecological system solutions for characteristic building types in the residential, civic, industrial and agricultural building industry sectors from the perspective of standard, low-energy and intelligent buildings.

By choosing elective courses and the topic of the final thesis, the students will select an area of their interest in which they will extend the professional knowledge necessary for both successful utilization in practice as well as their effective professional placement. The study is completed by the preparation of a diploma thesis in the 3rd semester of study, its defence and the passing of the final graduation examination.

Structure of study:

The first and second semesters are fully full-time and instruction in the form of lectures, practical classes, seminars, laboratories and project consultations is held in the buildings of the Faculty of Civil Engineering CTU in Prague. The third semester is devoted to the preparation of the diploma thesis and takes the form of individual consultations.

Career prospects:

The graduates of the branch of Building and Environment will be employed primarily as:
  • authorized engineers after passing professional examinations
  • specialist designers in the field of building services, building physics
  • construction managers
  • project managers
  • energy specialists
  • civil servants - building authority, sanitary station
  • doctoral degree students
  • in academia and other institutions involved in science, research, development and innovation
