Water availability and quality is becoming an issue worldwide. Climate change and the pollution of water and the environment are global problems affecting our society. To satisfy our civilization demand for water and renewable energy resources while producing.

Characteristics:

  • The programme provides a balanced combination of technical skills and scientific competences to solve complex problems, build facilities and provide services in water - and environment - related disciplines.
  • The competences are based on advanced knowledge of theory fundamentals (hydraulics, hydrology) and understanding of governing physical processes and phenomena (flow, transport, etc.).
  • he training includes the modelling of processes for the design of structures (e.g., flood protection, water supply) or for the optimization of technologies and operations (e.g., waste water treatment, environmental processes).
  • The 2-year programme awards the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Ing.). The gained scientific knowledge can be further developed in the doctoral study programme offered by the University. Sustainable solutions for related environmental challenges, the society needs water & environmental specialists with sound technical education as offered in this study programme.

Structure of study:

The programme is composed of a common core (a block of compulsory core courses providing a broad fundamental basis) and three elective specializations. At the beginning of the programme study, a student chooses one of the following specializations:

Hydraulic Engineering

  • focus on hydraulic structures (dams, weirs, locks), flood protection, river control, hydropower, inland waterways, etc.

Water Management

  • focus on drinking water production and supply, water quality, urban drainage, wastewater treatment, etc.

Environmental Engineering and Science

  • focus on groundwater and drought, environmental processes and monitoring, sustainable landscape, etc.

Besides the common-core courses, each specialization offers specific compulsory courses further extending the knowledge of physical processes, engineering applications and skills for effective engineering design in the field of a selected specialization. The student´s list of programme courses is complemented with a selection of elective courses of individual interest (courses from the other specializations). Furthermore, the programme contains a series of invited lectures, a track-based project and the MSc Thesis.

Water & environmental engineers find employment opportunities and career prospects with profit- and non-profit employers such as:
  • contractors,
  • engineering and consultancy companies,
  • water administrators,
  • governmental bodies (ministries, municipalities) and NGOs,
  • academic institutions (universities, research institutes).
