DOCTORAL DEGREE STUDY PROGRAMME
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

The study in this program is subjected to tuition fees charged.

The doctoral degree programme focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the processes present in an open and urban landscape and on the interactions of human activities within the landscape and with both the landscape and the surrounding environment as such. The objective of studies is to understand these interactions and try to eliminate their negative impacts.

Features

  • The underlying educational model is based on an interdisciplinary approach, including, among others, the issues of water management, climate change, transport, the use of specific materials, landscape ecology as such, but also urban planning, the use of GIS tools to evaluate problems and find solutions to them.
  • Students are expected, on the one hand, to be independent and, on the other hand, to be able to work in research teams, where their own sub-assignments will be solved in close cooperation with other colleagues.
  • The topics of dissertations are usually “tailored” to meet the requirements of both the applicant and potential supervisor.
  • Emphasis is put on nurturing students’ competence in obtaining information from international sources of scientific information and improving their presentation and publishing skills in English throughout their studies.
  • Students have the opportunity to study at one of a total of 11 professional workplaces, which documents the emphasis on interdisciplinary study.
  • The use of state-of-the-art technology, instrumentation and fully equipped laboratories is a prerequisite, as well as field work, the monitoring of investigated phenomena or experimental campaigns.
  • Great emphasis is placed on the internationalization of studies, i.e. students have to spend some time abroad at one of the partner renowned workplaces during their studies. Students are also involved in international research teams of individual departments.
  • The aim of the programme is to train graduates who will have mastered the principles and procedures of research in a broader and interdisciplinary team with a wider understanding of contexts rather than very narrowly focused specialists in a single field.

The world is changing – partly due to the fact that humankind has acquired an ever increasing ability of adapting the environment to its image and needs, and partly as a result of global changes, either man-made or spontaneous. The world population is constantly increasing, and together with people’s efforts to increase their standard of living and the constant growth of the global economy, the pressure on the environment as a whole is escalating.

In the developed world, these tendencies must be confronted by striving for the deepest possible knowledge not only within individual partial fields, but in a wider context – to get to know the circumstances, potential causes and consequences, to be able to predict. To work in the widest possible teams, learn both the knowledge itself as well as mutual understanding, cooperation and tolerance.

These are the objectives of instruction in the doctoral degree programme of Environmental Engineering.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The graduates of the EE programme will find employment as, e.g.:

  • teachers and researchers in the academic sector and other institutions involved in science, research, development and innovations in the field of landscape, landscape engineering and management of landscape processes;
  • specialists in environmental conservation in large companies, corporations or in state administration and local government;
  • members or leaders of large interdisciplinary teams at the national or international level, mainly in the field of landscape management;
  • specialists solving complex projects and contracts which are in conflict with the environment.
